In a report from February 2021, Reporters Without Borders insisted that “Greece’s new national guidelines for policing demonstrations are likely to restrict the media’s reporting and access to information, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) warns, calling on the Greek authorities to review the guidelines in consultation with representatives of the country’s journalists.” Photo by Angelos Tzortzinis / AFP

FEATURE: Freedom of the press suffered in Greece during 2020

Reporters Without Borders just published an update on press freedom during 2020 within Greece. The situation is not good to say the least. The conservative government led by Kyriakos Mitsotakis really sought to control the flow of information whether it be on COVID-19 or refugee issues. Here is their summary:

“Press freedom suffered in Greece in 2020. The conservative government led by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis granted generous tax rebates on advertising in the media…

Borders kill, not the sea

A group with four children, including the youngest, only 18 months old, were pushed back to Belarus by officers of the Polish Border Guard.
Tragically, the 16-year-old boy died during the night.

Before that, he was supposed to vomit blood, according to the findings of the Ocrzenie foundation. Following the previously well tested rhetoric on other EU external borders, the PR of the border guard claimed no such instance happened, while the MoI says they corroborated their suspicions on terrorists among those fleeing, which is something also seen previously.

Previously, as we reported, more people died last week of hypothermia…

FEATURED: More Money for Turkey

Described as “absolutely catastrophic” and “atrocious”, the 2016 deal ensured that people who arrive to the EU have been resettled in Turkey. The result has been people waiting in sub-standard camps whilst processing takes place. …

During the last weeks, the Danish author and human rights activist AnneLise Marstrand-Jørgensen published on her Facebook wall five stories under the common headline “Women without rights” (Kvinder uden rettigheder). The common theme and thread in these stories is the Danish asylum system and the practices and conditions for women who have had their residence permit revoked.

At the beginning of the week, at least seven women were picked up by the police early in the morning from the family departure centres at Avnstrup, Sjælsmark and Kærshovedgaard around Denmark. …

A London charity, Da’aro Youth Project, which supports young asylum seekers from the Horn of Africa, has conducted research into the deaths of 11 young people either in care or who were recent care leavers, all of whom died by suicide.

We are gravely concerned that this number is just the ‘tip of an iceberg’ as there is no requirement for coroners to record nationality or…

Today we want to give visibility to the ongoing practices by the officials in France, as the activist group Human Rights Observers, denouncing the violence and mistreatment of people on the move in the north of France, have reported yet another violent expulsion and removal of all things used by the people in the area.

The ignoring of the underlying issues, and the intentional destruction of people’s belongings is done with the intention to deprive the people of all options, to dehumanize and illegalize their existence in the area, to discourage them from moving on and seeking a new…

In yesterday’s digest we reported on the recent opening of the highly-criticized new camp on Samos. Located in the Zervou area of the island, far from Samos town and any resources, the prison-like camp is designed to host up to 3,000 people. The facility is surrounded by barbed wire, and the entry and exit points are controlled by metal detectors; indeed, camp residents can enter only by scanning their electronic ID card and their fingerprints. The camp’s opening this week was met with protests from camp residents, solidarity workers and local residents. …
