In a report from February 2021, Reporters Without Borders insisted that “Greece’s new national guidelines for policing demonstrations are likely to restrict the media’s reporting and access to information, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) warns, calling on the Greek authorities to review the guidelines in consultation with representatives of the country’s journalists.” Photo by Angelos Tzortzinis / AFP

FEATURE: Freedom of the press suffered in Greece during 2020

Reporters Without Borders just published an update on press freedom during 2020 within Greece. The situation is not good to say the least. The conservative government led by Kyriakos Mitsotakis really sought to control the flow of information whether it be on COVID-19 or refugee issues. Here is their summary:

“Press freedom suffered in Greece in 2020. The conservative government led by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis granted generous tax rebates on advertising in the media…

Lebanese banks have burned at least 250 million dollars in UN humanitarian aid, which was intended to support people on the run and poor communities. According to Thomson Reuters Foundation, they lost the money by “selling the local currency at highly unfavorable rates”, Al Arabiya reports. Due to the economic crisis and inflation, the value of the aid has shrunk despite the amount per person increasing , making it hard for people to get basic supplies like food.

Protest in Napoli for regularization

There is a protest on Thursday organized by Movimento Migranti e Rifugiati di Napoli for emergency temporary residence permits that would provide a pathway to permanent status for migrant workers. Current residency permits for workers tie people’s residency to a work contract, which left many without any access to necessary services during the pandemic and economic crisis when many lost their jobs. The amnesty measure the Italian government passed in 2020 was never enough because it only helped people in the agricultural sector, even though foreign workers are also the backbone of housekeeping and other industries, as well as other…

Photo by Freedom for the Moria 6 who said in a press release 13/06/21 “Yesterday’s verdict came as no surprise to international trial observers who criticized the lack of evidence and spoke of an unfair trial procedure. Only 15 people were allowed in the courtroom. The public, including journalists, a delegation of international observers, and a representative of the UNHCR, was prevented from observing proceedings. At least six police officers were in the room — a disproportionate number that was not necessary to secure the court. A strong crowd of people showed their support for the defendants in the front of the court building.” More here.

Civil Fleet Reports on the Moria fire trials and how they were not up to legal standards:

“The trial of four Afghan teenagers jailed for 10 years each for starting a fire that destroyed a much-criticised refugee camp last year was not up to legal standards, observers have said. The youths were found guilty on Saturday of ‘arson with risk to human life’ for the fire that broke out at the vastly overcrowded Moria refugee camp on the Aegean island of Lesbos.

Greek authorities left about 12,000 people without help for days after the camp, originally built to house 3,000…
